Two Kurdish labor activists sentenced to a total of two years in prison

"Iqbal Shabani" and "Tawfiq Mahmoudi", two Kurdish labor activists, were sentenced by the First Branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj to one year of suspended prison for three years and one year of penal servitude, respectively.

 

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network reported on Monday, May 13, that the court hearing on the case of Iqbal Shabani on charges of "collaborating with hostile parties" was held on May 5 in the first branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj, presided over by Judge Saeedi, and on Saturday, May 11, Mr. Shabani was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for three years.

Iqbal Shabani, an inspector for the Sanandaj Bakery Workers' Union, was arrested by security forces in Sanandaj on February 19, 2019, and released after 25 days on bail of 100 million Tomans.

 

According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, the trial of Tofigh Mahmoudi was held on Saturday, May 12, by the First Branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj on charges of "collaborating with hostile parties," and the labor activist was sentenced to one year in prison.

Towfiq Mohammadi was arrested by security forces at his workplace in Sanandaj on March 8, 2018, and was released from Sanandaj Prison on Saturday, May 11, after a court hearing and two months of detention on a bail of one hundred million tomans.

In February of last year, Amnesty International called 2018 the "year of shame" for the Islamic Republic, announcing that more than seven thousand people, including participants in demonstrations, students, journalists, women's rights activists, environmental activists, labor activists, and ethnic and religious minority rights activists, had been arrested in Iran this year.
