Reza Pahlavi calls for Biden's solidarity with the Iranian people

Prince Reza Pahlavi, publishing a letter on his Telegram page, called on the new US President Joe Biden to show solidarity with the Iranian people against the "cruel and medieval dictatorship of the Islamic Republic."

In this letter, which he published on Wednesday, February 1, coinciding with the inauguration of Mr. Biden as the new President of the United States, Mr. Pahlavi writes that he is encouraged by the fact that during the election campaign he expressed his commitment to advancing democracy and human rights outside the borders of the United States.

The letter continued: "Given the growing strength and momentum of the pro-democracy and human rights movement in my country, Iran, my compatriots hope and expect that you and your government will stand in solidarity with them as they continue their struggle against the brutal and medieval dictatorship of the Islamic Republic."

Mr. Biden promised during his election campaign to return to the JCPOA, but said that this would not be easy.

Lloyd Austin, a retired US Army general who is set to lead the Pentagon in Mr. Biden's administration, also described the Iranian regime on Wednesday as a threat to US allies in the region and the forces deployed there.

Also, April Hines, Mr. Biden's nominee to serve as director of national intelligence, said on Tuesday that "we have a long way to go" before Iran is again subject to strict oversight under the JCPOA.
