Suri Babaei, a civil activist protesting compulsory hijab, was arrested

Suri Babaei Chegini, a civil activist protesting against compulsory hijab, was arrested in Qazvin on Wednesday evening, July 12.

According to social media reports, citing Mohammad Reza Moradbehrouzi, Ms. Babaei's husband, eight officers, two of whom were women, stormed the house of Ms. Babaei's brother, arrested him, confiscated his and his children's cell phones, and threatened his 13-year-old daughter.

Ms. Babaei posted a video of herself on social media on July 12 in support of the "Hijab Without Hijab" and "No to Compulsory Hijab" campaigns.

In the video, she said that accepting the headscarf as a form of clothing is a seal of approval for all the "injustices" in "Islamic laws against women."

He mentioned, among these laws, "half the blood money for women compared to men, the right to inheritance for girls compared to boys, the right to custody of children, the right to divorce, the right to choose what to wear, and the impossibility of an Iranian woman traveling to another country without the consent of a male lawyer, as well as the right of a Muslim man to officially marry four wives and to have unlimited concubines."

She then removed her headscarf in protest against all these "indignity" and called on Iranian men to support campaigns protesting against the compulsory hijab.

Ms. Babaei had previously been summoned to the prosecutor's office due to her civic activities, particularly regarding the compulsory hijab.

His wife has also previously been sentenced in absentia to one year in prison on charges of "insulting the leadership" and to a fine of 10 million tomans on charges of "spreading lies with the intent to disturb public opinion."

In recent days, especially on the occasion of July 21, which is called "Hijab and Chastity Day" in the Islamic Republic of Iran's calendar, a significant number of Iranian women have shown their protest against the mandatory hijab in Iran by publishing videos of themselves appearing in social spaces without the hijab.

In recent weeks and months, a new wave of strictures has begun regarding the clothing of citizens, especially women, in Iran.
