Prince Reza Pahlavi urged the Iranian-born speaker of the Norwegian parliament to "continue to defend our compatriots thirsting for freedom."

In a message posted on his social media accounts on Thursday, December 1, Prince Reza Pahlavi expressed his satisfaction with the election of Masoud Gharahkhani as the Speaker of the Norwegian Parliament, and described his perseverance as a shining example for Iranians.

He wrote in the message: "Undoubtedly, like many of our compatriots who were forced to leave Iran, you also suffered as refugees in a new land. Despite this, the determination and perseverance you have shown to reach the highest position of democratic leadership in your host country is admirable."

Expressing his hope that Mr. Gharahani would “continue to defend our compatriots thirsting for freedom and democracy,” Prince Reza Pahlavi emphasized: “Your election is a unique opportunity to cooperate and stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom. I look forward to meeting you in person in the near future.”

Massoud Gharekhani, an Iranian-American politician who immigrated to Norway as a child, was elected last week as the speaker of the parliament of this northern European country.

He was born in Tehran in 1982 and immigrated to Norway with his family when he was five years old, during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war.

Mr. Qarakhani has said that he wants to use this opportunity to strengthen democracy, people's well-being, gender equality, and civil liberties in Norway.

The Norwegian Prime Minister praised the fact that an immigrant was able to head parliament, saying, "I know Massoud is an honest and experienced politician."
