Hassan Mozaffari, the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of the provincial capital of Zanjan, said on Monday that the mayor of Zanjan and the mayor of District 3 of the city were arrested following the death of a six-year-old child.
According to the judiciary news agency Mizan, the child fell into a well that had no protection or cover and died of suffocation.
The report adds that following the death of this child, the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of the capital of Zanjan province arrived at the scene of the incident, closely inspected the scene, and summoned the mayor of Zanjan, the mayor of District 3, and the CEO of the Municipal Water and Sewage Company.
Referring to the dissatisfaction of the region's citizens with the performance of the Zanjan Municipality, the Zanjan Provincial Prosecutor said: "During the investigation, and given the lack of government regulations, lack of proper supervision, and negligence by the municipality officials, the mayor of Zanjan, along with the mayor of District 3, are under surveillance and further judicial investigation and review is underway, and the final report will be announced as soon as the investigation is completed."
Meanwhile, Mohammad Moradi, the public relations officer for Zanjan Municipality, confirmed the news to IRNA, saying: "Due to the death of this child, the mayor of Zanjan was arrested as the culprit for some explanations."
He added: "It is not clear whether the well the child fell into had a guard and it was removed or whether it was not guarded from the beginning."
However, the Zanjan Prosecutor's Office has announced: "The perpetrators of the incident will be dealt with legally, decisively and without any leniency."
