Amnesty International: Cluster bombs used in the Karabakh war

The warring parties in Nagorno-Karabakh are using cluster bombs, which are causing a significant increase in civilian casualties, Amnesty International said, calling on Azerbaijan and Armenia to respect the right to life of civilians.

Amnesty International says it has obtained footage showing cluster bombs being used in the fighting around Nagorno-Karabakh. The same organization on Monday (October 6) suggested that Israeli-made cluster bombs were fired from Azerbaijan.

Cluster bombs in many cases do not explode, but remain in the ground, like mines, permanently endangering the lives of local residents.

International law prohibits the use of cluster bombs under any circumstances, but Amnesty International believes that these munitions have been used in the Karabakh war to terrorize ordinary people.

According to another report published on Tuesday, the city of Stepanakert has once again come under artillery fire from the Azerbaijani army with unprecedented intensity.

AFP, citing local residents, reported artillery attacks and a series of explosions in and around the capital of Karabakh. The attacks mostly targeted residential areas, with the main victims being ordinary residents of the city.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since the collapse of the Soviet Union. More than 30,000 people were killed in the fierce fighting that took place between 1991 and 1994 between the two sides over control of the mountainous region of Karabakh.
