France calls for immediate release of Iranian-French citizen Fariba Adelkhah

The French Foreign Ministry called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately release Fariba Adelkhah following the announcement of her return to prison. The Iranian-French citizen, who had been temporarily released, was transferred back to prison after 15 months.

On the evening of Wednesday, January 12, the French Foreign Ministry called the return to prison of political science researcher Fariba Adelkhah "unjustified" and called for the immediate release of this Iranian-French citizen.

A statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry in this regard also stated: "This action will only have a negative impact on relations between France and the Islamic Republic of Iran and will weaken trust between the two countries."

The French Foreign Ministry also published a message on Twitter calling for the immediate release of Fariba Adelkhah.

Fariba Adelkhah was arrested by the Revolutionary Guards in June 2019, along with Roland Marchal, a French researcher and her partner, during their trip to Iran.

Roland Marshall was released in a prisoner exchange between Iran and France. During the exchange, Marshall was exchanged for Jalal Rouhollahnejad. Rouhollahnejad was serving a prison sentence in France on charges of circumventing US sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran and was due to be extradited to the United States.

Fariba Adelkhah, a researcher at the Center for Political Science Studies in Paris, was initially arrested on “espionage charges.”

In May 2020, the judiciary issued him a non-final sentence of 6 years in prison on charges of "gathering and colluding to act against national security" and "propaganda against the system."

The judiciary finally announced a final sentence of 5 years in prison for Fariba Adelkhah in July of that year.

He was temporarily released in October of last year with an electronic monitoring device and bail, but on Wednesday, January 12, he was returned to Evin Prison after about 15 months.

The Committee to Support Fariba Adelkhah in France has also protested the actions of the Islamic Republic authorities to transfer this Iranian-French citizen back to prison.
