Netblocks: Mobile internet disruptions continue following protests in Khuzestan

Netblocks, which monitors internet restrictions around the world, confirmed on Wednesday, July 20, the continued significant disruption of mobile internet in Iran's Khuzestan province.

Netblocks has announced that network data indicates significant regional disruption of mobile internet services in Iran, which began on Thursday, July 15, following widespread protests over water shortages in Khuzestan province and continues to this day.

Previously, users on social networks had reported internet disruptions in Khuzestan.

During the November 2019 protests, along with the severe repression of the protesters, mobile internet was cut off or disrupted in most regions of Iran.

November 2019 coincided with widespread public protests that were initially a reaction to the sudden increase in gasoline prices, but quickly changed direction and targeted the Islamic Republic government.

These protests were met with severe and violent repression, leaving hundreds dead.

Iran's Interior Minister had said that between 200 and 225 people were killed in these protests, but Amnesty International, announcing the identities of at least 304 of the dead, emphasized that the death toll could be much higher.

Reuters also reported that the death toll from the protests was at least 1,500, citing "three sources close to Ayatollah Khamenei's inner circle" and a fourth official, who said that the leader of the Islamic Republic had told senior officials in the country to "do whatever is necessary to stop" the protests.
