Fireplace and chimney installed in Vatican to announce new pope

Vatican workers set about installing a special stove and chimney to announce the new pope.

The conclave to elect a new pope will take place on Wednesday, May 7, and Vatican workers have installed a special fireplace and chimney in the Sistine Chapel for the ceremony. The fireplace and chimney are being installed to announce the results of the vote.

The cardinals gathered here vote in secret, and the result of the vote is announced through the smoke from the burning ballot papers. If the cardinals reach an agreement and a new pope is elected, white smoke will come out of the chimney to signify the election of the new pope, and if not, black smoke will come out.
