Websites of several Iranian government institutions hacked amid protests over Mahsa Amini's death

On Wednesday, September 20, the websites of several government institutions of the Islamic Republic were targeted by the Anonymous group, the world's most famous hacking group, and the Central Bank's website was also inaccessible for a while.

On Wednesday, the Anonymous hacker group announced its attack on government websites in Iran and released a video message to the Iranian people and protesters over the death of Mahsa Amini, saying that it stands with them.

In New York, the Islamic Republic has been the target of blatant cyberattacks.

However, Mustafa Qamari-Vafa, a spokesman for the Central Bank, denied that the Central Bank's website had been hacked, tweeting: "The Central Bank's internet portal is available and was only unavailable for a few minutes due to an attack on the channel providing internet services to the Central Bank: In this type of attack, known as DDos, the network bandwidth is filled with fake traffic so that real users are denied access."

The Director General of Public Relations of the Central Bank stated that by cutting off external access to the infrastructure network, this disruption has been resolved and the Central Bank website is now accessible without any problems, adding: "Therefore, any claim that the Central Bank website has been hacked is denied."

According to reports, the website of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance also became inaccessible on Wednesday afternoon.

The Anonymous hacker group also said it had hacked other websites, including the Iranian Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) and the presidential spokesman's office. The IBC website has been down and restored several times this day.

In recent years, there have been many widespread cyber attacks on the websites of Iranian government institutions, and late last winter, the website of the Iranian Broadcasting Corporation was also subjected to cyber attacks.

Last August, hacking attacks by the "Justice Ali" group on Evin Prison cameras exposed the mistreatment of prisoners by officers.

The group announced yesterday, Tuesday, that it had launched a cyberattack on the website of the Center for Promoting Virtue and Forbidding Vice.

Also, cyberattacks on gas stations in November disrupted their operations for a while on the eve of the anniversary of the bloody November 2019 protests.

The UN Human Rights Office has announced that the Islamic Guidance Patrol has become more strict in recent months and is using violent and coercive methods in dealing with women who do not observe the Islamic hijab.

A recent example was the arrest of Mahsa Amali and her death as a result of beating by Islamic Guidance officers, an issue that led to widespread public protests.
