U.S. State Department Will Not Hold Ramadan Celebration

Two U.S. government officials say the U.S. State Department will not hold Ramadan ceremonies this year.

According to Reuters news agency, Ramadan iftar ceremonies or Eid al-Fitr celebrations have been held annually at this ministry since 1998.

However, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson rejected a request from the State Department’s Office of Faith and International Affairs to hold Ramadan ceremonies, stating that this year the State Department has no official programs for Ramadan.

However, a State Department spokesperson told Reuters that the ministry continues to pursue holding Eid al-Fitr celebrations, and American ambassadors hold Ramadan ceremonies every year around the world in their respective countries of assignment.
