Canada Arrests Huawei Executive at US Request for Violating Iran Sanctions

Canada has arrested one of the senior executives of Chinese technology company Huawei, who is accused of violating United States sanctions against Iran, at the request of the United States.

Reuters news agency reported on Thursday, December 6, that Meng Wanzhou, a member of Huawei’s board of directors and daughter of the company’s founder, has been arrested.

Huawei is a telecommunications services provider company but has been accused for some time of circumventing US sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Canadian sources say Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver in western Canada at the request of the United States.

It has been reported that she was detained two days ago and is being transferred to the United States.

She is among Huawei executives who had been under prosecution by the United States.

In June 2016, judicial authorities in New York accused Huawei of violating US sanctions. They said the company had transferred American products to Iran and other countries.

Also, in April of this year, Jean-Baptiste wrote an article in Forbes magazine titled “Investigation into Huawei Company’s Violations in Breaching Sanctions Against Iran.”

The author, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported that the US Department of Justice is reviewing the possibility of sanctions violations against Iran by the Chinese company and the transfer of prohibited technology to Iran.

Forbes previously wrote: This is not the first time that Huawei has flouted sanctions against various countries. The Bureau of Industry and Security in the US Federal Department of Commerce has stated that over the past five years, Huawei, by violating sanctions, has directly or indirectly exported American-made technology and industrial equipment to Sudan, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, and Iran.
