Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development claims ability to build "four million" homes in the next four years

Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development says that Ebrahim Raisi's government has the ability to build one million homes per year and that "four million" homes can be built in the next four years.

On Sunday, September 27, Rostam Ghasemi said about the plans of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development in the 13th government that the country has the engineering, technical, and corporate capacity to practically build one million houses.

He continued by saying that according to the recent law of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, all ministries are required to make their land available to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, and currently there are more than one million hectares of government land that must be made available to us.

Mr. Ghasemi continued, saying, "We will soon acquire these lands."

His statements about building one million housing units annually had been repeated by previous governments, and in particular, the "Mehr Housing" project, which was launched during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for low-income groups, was not successful and attracted much criticism.

Also, housing prices have increased more than eightfold during the eight years of Hassan Rouhani's administration.

The Central Bank of Iran announced in a report on Sunday that the average price per square meter of housing in Tehran in August this year reached 30 million 970 thousand tomans, an increase of 34 percent compared to August last year.

Mahmoud Mahmoudzadeh, Deputy Minister of Roads in the Hassan Rouhani government, said in July this year that there are 8.5 million "families" in Iran who are tenants.

With 26 million households, about a third of Iran's population is renter.
