Prices of various types of bread increased in Iran

On Sunday, July 17, the Tehran Traditional Bakers Union increased the approved price of "types of bread made with subsidized wheat, types one and two."

Mehr News Agency initially quoted "an informed source in the Tehran Governorate" as saying that the prices announced by the Traditional Bakers Union "have not been discussed" in the governorate.

Hours after Heshmatollah Asgari, deputy governor of Tehran, said, "The high price of bread in Tehran province is one of the decisions of the working group for organizing wheat, flour, and bread in Tehran province."

According to the new decree, each piece of Berber bread is priced from 1,800 to 2,500 tomans, Sangak is priced at 3,000 tomans, and Lavash is priced at 500 tomans.

Increases in bread prices have also been reported in other provinces and regions of Iran, including Mazandaran, Mashhad, and Karaj.

Last week, Bijan Nowruz Moghadam Abkenar, head of the Traditional Bakers Union, announced the union's request for a 100 percent increase in the price of bread this year.

He cited the reason for this request as the increase in "production costs and inflation, especially in the last two years," and warned that if the price of bread is not "revised," we should "expect more bakery units to close."

Bread is a staple in the diet of many Iranians, and rising prices could add to the cost burden on many families. Bread is one of the products for which the Iranian government sets an “approved price.” However, various reports indicate that most bakeries charge their customers prices that are higher than those approved by the government.
