Shahram Nazeri defends protesters: People are seeking their rights

Shahram Nazeri, a famous Iranian singer, said on Monday, May 16, in response to the protests in the country, that people are seeking their rights because their rights have been violated and protesting is also their right.

Mr. Nazeri told reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony honoring him in Erbil, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, that the conditions are not as good as the people deserve; so it is natural for them to take their rights.

In a video of the traditional music singer's interview that was posted on social media, he goes on to say that people are boiling over.

Shahram Nazeri said: "People are hungry and it is not appropriate for them to be waist-deep in trash and shame their families. People are in great distress and want their rights and they must get them."

So far, a number of prominent figures, including Varya Ghafouri, captain of the Esteghlal Tehran football team, and Jafar Panahi, director and critic of Iranian cinema, have reacted to these protests and their violent suppression.

The recent popular protests, which were sparked in mid-May this year following the official announcement of the increase in the price of bread and its rationing, and in response to the multiple increase in food prices in recent months, are still ongoing in a number of cities in Khuzestan and have spread to other provinces.
