Lawyer Ahmadreza Jalali: We have requested the formation of a new court for our client

The defense lawyer for Ahmad Reza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish physician and researcher and a prisoner sentenced to death in Iran, says that "his lawyers requested a retrial from the judiciary a few days ago."

Hilaleh Moussavian told AFP that evidence has been presented showing that "Mr. Jalali had no role in identifying the nuclear scientists," and that they are therefore calling for a new trial for their client.

Ahmadreza Jalali was sentenced to death in 2017 on charges of “passing information about two Iranian nuclear scientists to Mossad, which led to their assassination.” The Swedish government and those close to Mr. Jalali have denied the charge.

In recent days, the Islamic Republic of Iran Radio and Television (IRTV) and other media outlets close to the government in Iran have broadcast and published parts of the "forced confessions" of Ahmad Reza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish citizen.

These media outlets had previously announced, ahead of the Islamic Republic's officials, that the death sentence for this dual-national prisoner would be carried out by the end of May this year, i.e. by Saturday (May 31) at the latest.

In recent years, the Iranian government has arrested or exchanged a large number of foreign nationals and dual-national Iranians on various charges, including "espionage" and "collaboration with hostile governments."
