Fourth day of Farhad Meysami's strike demanding the cancellation of Ahmad Reza Jalali's death sentence

Farhad Meysami, a civil activist imprisoned in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, who has been on strike demanding the cancellation of the death sentence of Ahmad Reza Jalali, a prisoner with dual citizenship, has been experiencing a drop in blood pressure since yesterday.

According to HRANA News Agency, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, Farhad Meysami, a civil activist imprisoned in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, has been on strike since Saturday, May 7.

Farhad Meysami has been experiencing a drop in blood pressure since yesterday. He previously wrote an open letter stating his demand in this protest action, the cancellation of Ahmad Reza Jalali's death sentence.

Part of the letter reads: "Mr. Jalali has been threatened with execution by security agents for more than three years. These days, Ahmad Reza Jalali is one of the most helpless people on earth. Don't let Jalali be executed. No, I'll correct you: Don't let Jalali be executed 100 times."

Recently, ISNA news agency, citing informed sources, reported that the execution of Ahmad Reza Jalali, a dual-citizen prisoner, will be carried out by the end of May this year. According to ISNA, Mr. Jalali's death sentence has been ordered after confirmation by the Supreme Court.

Ahmadreza Jalali, a university professor who had traveled to Iran in May 2016 at the invitation of Tehran University, was arrested by security forces on charges of “committing war through espionage for Israel.” The Tehran prosecutor has accused Ahmadreza Jalali of “transferring information related to the regime’s top-secret projects in the fields of research, military, defense, and nuclear energy in exchange for receiving payments and Swedish citizenship for himself and his family.”

Mr. Jalali was ultimately sentenced to death on charges of espionage, and this sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court in December 2017.

Farhad Meysami is spending the fourth year of his sentence in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj without a single day of leave.

On February 18, 2021, he was summoned to Branch 1 of the Karaj Revolutionary Court in another case and charged. The charge against him is “propaganda against the system,” citing the publication of notes attributed to him in cyberspace.

Farhad Meysami was arrested by security forces on August 28, 2018 and sentenced by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati, to 5 years in prison for “gathering and colluding with the intention of committing a crime against national security,” and to 1 year in prison for “propaganda activity against the system,” as well as a 2-year ban on membership in political and social parties and groups, activity in cyberspace, the media, the press, and leaving the country.

By applying Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code to his case, the most severe punishment, namely 5 years of imprisonment, will be applicable to him for the charge of "gathering and colluding with the intention of committing a crime against national security."

On November 9, 2019, Mr. Meysami was suddenly transferred from Evin Prison to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj.
