Greece relocates hundreds of asylum seekers due to coronavirus outbreak

Greece is relocating hundreds of migrants from the Moria camp on the island of Lesbos to ease overcrowding during the coronavirus pandemic. The refugees in the camp include Iranian and Afghan citizens.
The European Union and human rights organizations had called on the Greek government to transfer migrants vulnerable to the coronavirus from camps on five Aegean islands to the Greek mainland.
According to Reuters, Greek authorities on Sunday planned to transfer 395 migrants in the Moria camp to the Greek mainland.
Greece has been implementing general quarantine rules since March 23, about six weeks ago, and this is the first time the plan has been implemented.

Before the quarantine began, 600 migrants had been transferred from Greek camps on the country's islands to the Greek mainland.
Greece says it plans to transfer 2,400 refugees from these camps.
There are currently 37,000 refugees living in camps on the Greek islands, which are overcrowded. Camp Maria, for example, is home to 19,300 people, six times its capacity.
So far, 2,626 people have been registered with the coronavirus in Greece, of whom 144 have died.
