A prison official in Khorasan Razavi announced the death of 9 prisoners due to coronavirus in Mashhad Prison.

The Director General of Khorasan Razavi Prisons, at a special press conference for Judiciary Week in Mashhad Central Prison, announced the death of a group of prisoners due to coronavirus infection over the past year.

Saeed Sarbaz Janfada, Director General of Khorasan Razavi Prisons, said in a press conference that last year, about nine prisoners who had just entered prison and those who had returned to prison after completing their leave lost their lives due to the coronavirus.

According to ISNA news agency, he further announced the death of two healthcare workers due to coronavirus and said: "We had two anonymous martyrs among our healthcare colleagues to maintain the health of prisoners inside the prison."

The Director General of Khorasan Razavi Prisons also claimed that the vaccination of prisoners over 60 years of age and healthcare personnel in Khorasan Razavi province's prisons has been completed.

It was in September of last year that the human rights organization "Abdolrahman Boroumand Foundation for Human Rights in Iran" described the situation of the coronavirus outbreak as "critical" in a detailed report on Iranian prisons, a copy of which was provided to Voice of America.

According to this human rights organization, the Islamic Republic is acting "completely irresponsibly" by violating international obligations regarding the right to life and the right to health of prisoners.
