Authority Speaks of “Unity” While Silencing People’s Voices Through Repression

Ali Khamenei spoke of national unity in his speech while silencing the voices of people through repression.

Ali Khamenei, in a speech yesterday, Sunday, September 2, on the occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of Ali ibn Musa al-Reza, once again emphasized the necessity of national unity and support for the President and armed forces. Khamenei, at this gathering where various segments of the people were present, said: “The enemies of Iran have become desperate from defeat in military wars and are now trying to achieve their goals by creating internal divisions.”

In his remarks, he stated: “Defending the system means defending the country and standing against the enemy. National unity ends up harming America and Israel and will prevent their attacks.” Khamenei also addressed political and media activists, saying: “Those who take positions on social networks, including X, must understand what they are doing.” He added, referring to American policies: “We want the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic system to obey us.” Khamenei considered this outlook the main reason for Washington’s hostility and continued: “Those who consider direct negotiations with America as a solution are superficial people.” He also criticized domestic opponents in his remarks, calling them “ignorant” or “agents of the enemy.” Khamenei stressed: “Any criticism that undermines the foundations of the Islamic Republic serves the goals of foreigners.”

Such stances show that the government still places every opposing voice within the sphere of enmity and effectively leaves no room for civil protest or constructive criticism.

He also attacked a group of foreign-based opponents who, after the recent war began, held a meeting about “the government after the Islamic Republic,” calling them mercenaries and deluded, and said: “Woe to that Iranian who works against his own country and in favor of Zionism and America.”

These remarks come as Iranian society faces deep economic problems, a livelihood crisis, widespread corruption, and political restrictions. Critics say that the constant attribution of all issues to “enemy conspiracy” is not only no answer to people’s difficult lives, but is a tool to silence protests and justify repression. They stressed: “How can one speak of national unity when any opposition, even within the framework of law, is quickly branded as an enemy or foreign agent?”

In another part of his speech, while referring to support for the government and President, Khamenei said: “People should support the servants of the country, especially the hardworking and diligent President.” But the fundamental question remains unanswered: “Is supporting a structure whose record is filled with repression, restrictions, and disregarding people’s wishes a defense of the country, or merely ensures the continuity of authority?”

Ali Khamenei has repeatedly considered “unity” the nation’s main shield, but critics warn that unity formed on the basis of eliminating and threatening opponents is more akin to forced silence than genuine solidarity.
