Body Found in Houston, Texas Lake Identified: Ali Ajami, Iranian Human Rights Activist

A body discovered last week in McGovern Lake in Houston, Texas, United States, has been identified as belonging to Ali Ajami, an Iranian political activist and human rights defender.

According to a report from the local branch of ABC News in Texas, a passerby found his body floating in the lake at 10 a.m. on May 6th. Ajami was 37 years old at the time of his death.

Police experts say it is unclear how long he had been in the water before being discovered.

Ali Ajami was arrested in February 2010 by security forces at his father’s house in Sabzevar while he was a law student and editor of a student publication.

He was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison on charges of propaganda against the system and actions against national security. After his release, he left Iran some time later.

One of Ali Ajami’s friends said, “All he wanted was a simple, peaceful, and orderly life for himself and all the people of the world, including the people of his own country (Iran).”
