Iran Faces Military Threat, Failed Diplomacy, and Kremlin’s Denial of Pezeshkian Message to Trump

As Axios reports on U.S. military preparations for a possible resumption of large-scale operations against Iran, the Kremlin has stated that Masoud Pezeshkian did not convey any message to Donald Trump during his meeting with Vladimir Putin—two developments that heighten uncertainty about the diplomatic path forward and the future of tensions.

According to a report published by Axios, senior American officials informed Herzi Halevi, Chief of Staff of the Israeli military, on Tuesday of Washington’s military readiness for a possible resumption of large-scale operations against Iran in the coming weeks. The report was published citing an American official and a source familiar with the contents of the conversation.

According to Axios, the Pentagon had previously ordered U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to complete necessary military preparations for a possible resumption of military operations. However, this order did not include a specific timeline for launching strikes, and at the time of the report’s publication, Donald Trump had not announced a final decision on resuming operations.

American and Israeli sources said that if war resumes, potential strikes could target energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and other targets in Iran. However, military preparedness planning alone does not necessarily mean an attack is certain.

On Thursday, October 8, Trump announced that the United States would not attack Iran before the midterm elections on November 3. He also spoke of continuing talks with Tehran; negotiations that, according to Axios, have yet to show clear signs of resolving fundamental differences between the two sides.

In another development, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, announced on Friday, October 9, that Masoud Pezeshkian did not convey any message to Donald Trump during his recent meeting with Vladimir Putin in Turkmenistan. The TASS news agency reported that Peskov, in response to a question about the possibility of conveying a message through the Russian president, said: “No, he did not convey any message.”

These statements come as Putin had previously spoken of Moscow’s readiness to help resolve the dispute, and Trump had also indicated the possibility of a telephone conversation with the Russian president.

Overall, the reports suggest continued U.S. military preparations alongside ongoing diplomatic contacts and efforts; however, neither a definite timeline for an attack has been announced nor clear signs of an agreement to resolve differences between Tehran and Washington have emerged. Under such circumstances, the main cost of continued tensions and the possibility of escalating conflict could weigh heavily on the lives of Iran’s people and regional security.
