This is not the first time an Iranian citizen has been sentenced to lengthy prison terms by the Revolutionary Court and Iran’s judicial system. Previously, Atallah Rezaei, a resident of Qom who was arrested by security forces in June of this year, was sentenced by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court under the presiding judge Salwati on charges of “assembly and conspiracy against the system,” “propaganda against the system,” and “insulting the leadership” to a total of 8 years in prison.
Amnesty International called 2018 a “year of shame” for the Islamic Republic last month and announced that more than seven thousand people, including protest participants, students, journalists, women’s rights activists, environmental activists, labor activists, and ethnic and religious minority rights activists, were arrested in Iran during that year.
The U.S. State Department has repeatedly condemned the violent dealings of the Islamic Republic’s regime with the Iranian people under various pretexts, including its treatment of freedom of choice in dress, as well as the repeated and continuous violations of the rights of Iranian citizens by regime agents.
