Mustafa Abdi, Gonabadi Dervish, Contracts COVID-19 in Tehran’s Great Prison

Hrana News Agency – Mustafa Abdi, a Gonabadi dervish imprisoned in Tehran’s Great Prison has contracted COVID-19. Despite showing respiratory symptoms, he has not yet been approved for hospital transfer or medical furlough.
According to Hrana News Agency, the news organ of the Iranian Human Rights Activists Network, Mustafa Abdi has contracted COVID-19 in Tehran’s Great Prison.
Hassan Abdi, the father of this imprisoned Gonabadi dervish, announced the news on his personal page, stating that this is the third time his son has contracted COVID-19 while in prison. According to a source close to Mr. Abdi’s family, despite repeated follow-ups and the appearance of respiratory symptoms, he has not yet been approved for medical furlough or transfer to a hospital outside the prison.
Hrana reported last week, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the Golestan Haftom incident, on the latest condition of Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam, Mustafa Abdi, Kasseri Nouri, and Abbas Dehghan, four Gonabadi dervishes imprisoned in Tehran’s Great Prison and Adelabad Prison in Shiraz.
Mustafa Abdi, a Gonabadi dervish and one of the managers of the Majzoban Noor website, was arrested in the early morning of the 1st of Esfand 1396 (February 20, 2018) during the Golestan Haftom incident and transferred to Tehran’s Great Prison.
He was sentenced by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court to 26 years and three months in prison, 148 lashes, two years of exile to Sistan and Baluchestan, two years of travel ban from the country, and two years of prohibition from membership in groups, political and social parties, and media activities.
With the application of Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the severest punishment of seven and a half years imprisonment is enforceable.
Mr. Abdi had previously been arrested and convicted. He was sentenced in June 2013 by Judge Solwati to three years imprisonment on charges of assembly and conspiracy to undermine national security, and was released from Evin Prison in November 2015 after serving his three-year sentence.
Mr. Abdi is currently serving his sentence in Hall 2 of Ward 2, Section 5 of Tehran’s Great Prison. Mustafa Abdi was born in 1985.
