Parliamentary Representative: Many Children Severely Ill in Earthquake-Affected Areas of Sarab

Yousof Davudi, the parliamentary representative of Sarab in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, reported that “many children in earthquake-affected areas of Sarab are suffering from colds” and stated that these children’s bodies are “completely affected by cold.”

According to a report from Saturday (November 8) by ISNA news agency, Davudi, during a crisis management session at the East Azerbaijan Governor’s Office, added that “given the weather conditions in the earthquake-affected areas of Sarab county, people are severely ill and we need at least seven to eight teams of general practitioners to visit the patients.”

Referring to the notably low temperatures in Sarab, he criticized the lack of electric heaters for temporary shelter tents for earthquake victims, stating that on Saturday, “we almost lost five people due to carbon monoxide poisoning from heating devices in the tents.”

Davudi also reported the deaths of two people from inhaling carbon monoxide gas in the tents, and cited “the need for warm food, provision of safe heating that causes no harm to people, and the prevention of diseases such as colds” as the main problems facing people in the earthquake-affected areas.

ISNA news agency also reported on Sunday (November 9), citing Farzad Rahmani, head of pre-hospital emergency services at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, about the survival of a 15-day-old child whose parents died the previous day from carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to Mr. Rahmani, “the invisible killer did not overcome the 15-day-old earthquake victim,” and the child is currently in “good physical condition.”

As this official announced, so far “23 earthquake victims in the province have suffered gas poisoning due to failure to observe safety measures.”

Based on this report, a total of 720 people have been injured in the aftermath of an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 Richter scale in Miandoab, with the main causes of injury being fleeing from earthquake-damaged homes and stress; of this number, 450 injured were from Sarab county and the rest from Miandoab.

This earthquake, which occurred at 2:17 AM on Friday (November 7), shook the city of Turk in Miandoab county in East Azerbaijan province, resulting in five deaths so far.

According to the Governor of East Azerbaijan, the earthquake caused 10 to 100 percent damage to more than 2,300 residential units and resulted in the loss of more than 1,500 livestock.

Another report indicates that Ali Larijani, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, requested the relevant ministries to examine the needs of earthquake victims and “build shelters for them sooner.”

Larijani, referring to the assignment of a task to the Construction Commission to dispatch a delegation to the earthquake-affected areas of Miandoab and Sarab, given the cold weather conditions in those areas, added: “It is necessary for the Housing Foundation and the Red Crescent to make serious efforts. The Interior Ministry must also do its work with careful attention.”
