According to Hrana news agency, citing the newspaper Haft Sobh, on Sunday, the 3rd of Bahman 1400, a teenage girl was killed by knife wounds from her brother due to posting her images on social media.
Based on this report, last Sunday, Bandar Abbas police officers were notified by one of the city’s hospitals about the suspicious death of a teenage girl. When police arrived at the hospital, hospital authorities announced that a teenage girl who had been admitted due to sharp object injuries had died.
Gholamreza Jafari, the police commander of Hormozgan province, stated in this regard: “Following a report from the emergency police center 110 regarding a stabbing incident, officers immediately went to the hospital to investigate the matter. After police arrival at the scene and conducting expert investigations, the family members of the deceased, who were foreign nationals residing in Bandar Abbas, stated that their daughter was passing through one of the city’s neighborhoods when she was attacked by two young men and stabbed, and she died on the way to the hospital and was transferred to the hospital morgue.”
Following police investigations and interrogations, it was determined that the teenage girl was killed by her brother.
The brother of the girl stated during interrogation: “I was in conflict with my teenage sister over social media and was always angry that she was constantly on Instagram posting her photos on this social platform, until in anger I killed her.”
The police commander of Hormozgan province, referring to the identification of the deceased’s family members for the crime of concealing murder along with the murder suspect, told the judicial authorities: “After inspecting the deceased’s residence, blood traces belonging to the victim were found in the house.”
Honor-based crimes or honor killings refer to the commission of violence and often the killing of women in a family by male relatives.
These women are punished for “bringing shame to the honor of their family.” This shame includes various matters, such as refusing forced marriage, being a victim of sexual assault, getting divorced (even from an unsuitable husband), relations with the opposite sex, or committing adultery. For a person to become a victim of honor crimes, it is sufficient that it is merely suspected that they have brought dishonor to the family.
In Iranian law, provisions have been made to exempt those who commit “honor killings” from severe punishments.
