Germany: Refugees have created tens of thousands of new jobs

The arrival of more than a million refugees in Germany in the past year has boosted the country's job market, most notably in the construction and administrative services sectors, as well as private security companies.

A new study, the results of which were published on Monday (April 25), highlights the fact that the high number of refugees in Germany has not only caused financial losses for the country, but has also created many job opportunities for German citizens.

The study was conducted by experts from the Nuremberg Institute for Labor Market and Employment Research. According to a spokesperson for the institute, the increase in job openings between January 2015 and January 2016 was higher than usual.

He did not provide specific statistics in this regard, but said that the increase in job opportunities was "around the mid-5-digit range" (i.e., about 500,000 people).

The spokesman emphasized that construction and administrative services, as well as private security companies, have benefited the most from the influx of new refugees into Germany.

In February, the German newspaper Bild reported, citing several experts, that 700,000 new jobs would be created this year. Bild wrote that hotels and restaurants would need 30,000 new workers.

Marcel Fratcher, head of the German Institute for Economic Research, told the newspaper that "the German labor market has never been as strong as it is today."
