Increased pressure on Atena Daemi in prison; Soheila Hijab beaten

News published on social networks and human rights media outlets indicate that officials at Rasht's Lakan Prison are pressuring Atena Daemi, drawing an arrow on a statue dedicated to Ceausescu in support of the Iranian LGBT community, expelling the spokesperson for the Tehran Teachers' Union from the Education and Training Department, and beating Soheila Hijab in prison.

  • Atena Daemi's father says her life is in danger in Rasht's Lakan Prison

Atena Daemi's father announced on his Twitter account the escalating pressure on Atena Daemi by the authorities of Lakan Prison in Rasht, writing, "My daughter's life is in danger."

Hossein Daemi, the father of imprisoned civil activist Atena Daemi, expressed concern in a series of tweets on Tuesday, October 4, about his daughter's condition in Rasht's Lakan Prison, writing that despite the follow-up efforts, Ms. Daemi is still deprived of the right to make phone calls.

Referring to some of the pressure exerted on this civil activist by prison officials, including the head of the Andarzgah, Hossein Daemi wrote that the pressure on Atena has intensified after she revealed the conditions of prisoners held in this prison.

Athena Daemi had previously said in an audio file, referring to the situation of non-political prisoners in Rasht's Lakan Prison, that these prisoners in Rasht Prison, like other prisons, "are a showcase for the ruling party's lies, without enjoying the slightest benefit."

Atena Daemi's father had previously told VOA that with the end of Atena's five-year prison sentence, which she had been in prison without a single day off since 2016, her sentence of two years and one month in prison on charges of "insulting the leadership" was implemented in July of last year. In a verdict by Branch 24 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, Atena Daemi was sentenced to a total of two years in prison and 74 lashes on charges of "propaganda against the system" and "disturbing prison order."

Ms. Daemi's request for a retrial was rejected by the Supreme Court in March of last year, and she has been exiled to Lakan Prison in Rasht since late March.

  • Soheila Hijab beaten in prison

News published in some human rights media outlets indicate that Soheila Hijab, a lawyer imprisoned in Qarchak Prison in Varamin, was beaten by prisoners accused of violent crimes during her hunger strike.

The human rights website "HRANA" published this news and wrote that on Saturday, October 1, while Soheila was holding a sit-in and wearing a shroud as a sign of protest in prison, a group of prisoners who, provoked by a prison official, tried to force-feed her, beat her in the face of her resistance.

Earlier, Voice of America reported that Soheila Hijab, who had been on a hunger strike in prison since September 19, ended her strike on Sunday, October 1, following the authorities' promise to send a team from the judiciary to Qarchak Prison in Varamin to visit and address the problems of political prisoners.

Soheila Hijab was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court in March 2019 on charges of “propaganda against the regime,” “assembly and collusion,” “inciting public opinion with the intent to cause chaos,” “forming a group in support of women’s rights,” and “requesting a referendum and changing the constitution.” This sentence was confirmed on June 20, 2019, and the lawyer was arrested and beaten by the Revolutionary Guards of Tehran on the same day as she left the courtroom and taken to prison.
