"150%" increase in deaths of migratory birds in Miankaleh

The Mazandaran Environmental Organization announced on Tuesday, February 4, that the number of migratory bird deaths in the Miankaleh wetland had increased by "150 percent," and banned people from entering the area.

According to the organization's announcement, "the carcasses of 508 migratory waterfowl of the common tern, flamingo, and duck species" were collected yesterday, bringing the total number of migratory bird deaths to 839.

He did not reveal the exact cause of the deaths of the migratory birds. Previously, Ali Safar Maknali, head of the Veterinary Organization, had stated that the cause of the birds' deaths was botulism.

Last February, during a two-week period of bird deaths in the Miankaleh wetland, between ten thousand and 13 thousand birds, most of which were flamingos and pelicans, died, and the main cause of the bird deaths was announced to be botulism.

The grebe is an aquatic bird native to Iran. Flamingos are also aquatic and live in coastal marshes, mudflats, and the like.

The Miankaleh Wetland is part of a peninsula of the same name and is located in the southeast of the Caspian Sea.

The Miankaleh Peninsula covers an area of ​​nearly 70,000 hectares. As a protected area, Miankaleh is considered a haven for wildlife and migratory birds.
