63% increase in the electricity producer price index in winter

A new report from the Statistics Center shows that the electricity producer price index increased by nearly 63 percent in the winter of last year compared to the same season in 2019.

This index was 45.5 percent in the fall. For the entire year 2019, the percentage change in the electricity producer price index was 46.6 percent.

Iran is the largest country providing hidden subsidies for energy consumption. According to statistics from the International Energy Agency, Iran had about $52 billion in hidden subsidies for the electricity sector in 2019; in other words, if the government exported electricity generated by power plants instead of selling it domestically, it would earn about $52 billion more in revenue.

The Iranian government's hidden subsidy for electricity is more than four times that of China.

Over the past few years, the value of the rial has fallen sharply, causing hidden energy subsidies in Iran to soar; meaning the difference between energy prices in Iran and abroad has increased sharply.

The Iranian government recently launched a program to make electricity free for low-consumption households. Electricity prices also increased by 7 percent for average-consumption households and by 14 percent for high-consumption households.

The government has also announced that the price of electricity for industries will increase from 80 tomans to 300 tomans.
