Iran's Shameful Election to the UN as Vice-Chair of the Commission for Social Development

The Islamic Republic's appointment as Vice Chairman of the Social Development Commission is in complete contradiction to the human rights violations and recent crimes against the Iranian people, which have sparked widespread reactions.

The election of the Islamic Republic of Iran as Vice-Chair of the United Nations Commission on Social Development has sparked a wave of global criticism. The commission, which focuses on gender equality, human development, tolerance and the rejection of violence, has now handed over its Vice-Chair to a government that has experienced a violent crackdown on protesters, severe restrictions on freedom of expression and widespread violations of the rights of women and social activists over the past month.

At the commission meeting, after the candidates were introduced, the chairman of the meeting, in response to the protests of those present, only said: "I hear no objections," a phrase that shows that not only were human rights protests ignored, but the decision to approve Iran remained unchanged.

UN Watch, releasing a video introducing the Iranian government as the vice-chair of the UN Commission on Social Development, wrote: "This is real and not a joke." Human rights experts also reacted to this choice by saying: "The choice of a regime with such a record is a clear mockery of the mission of the Commission on Social Development."

Azam Bahrami, an Iranian environmental researcher, described this action on his social media account as "an insult and a slander" to the people of Iran, the world, and all global organizations.

Hillel Niwer, executive director of UN Watch, called Iran's selection "ridiculous" and emphasized that this choice sends a clear message to the world: the UN will not tolerate or be held accountable for a government that represses women and protesters.

The UN Commission on Social Development is mandated to promote social justice and human rights, but the election of a regime that has suppressed peaceful protesters, restricted civil liberties, and fired on large numbers of protesters in recent weeks and months demonstrates that the UN's selection mechanisms lack real sensitivity to human rights.

This appointment not only undermines the credibility of the commission, but also makes it seem like the UN has surrendered to political games rather than adhering to human rights standards.

Over the past month, the Islamic Republic's repressive actions against the Iranian people, including mass arrests, violence against protesters, restrictions on freedom of expression, and mass killings, clearly demonstrate that this regime is unfit to lead a commission that should advance equality, peace, and human development.

The election of Iran as Vice-Chair of the Commission on Social Development is not only a clear contradiction with the objectives of the Commission, but also a serious warning about the weakness of the UN mechanisms in confronting human rights violators.
