US Elections: Kamala Harris to be Joe Biden’s Vice President

Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s presidential election candidate, after months of anticipation and uncertainty, has selected Kamala Harris as his running mate. Observers have assessed Biden’s decision to choose a Black woman as correct and courageous.

Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s presidential election candidate for the United States, announced Kamala Harris, a Democratic Senator from California, as his running mate in a Twitter message.

Joe Biden said in his Twitter message: “I am very proud to introduce Kamala Harris as my running mate. She is a fierce fighter for ordinary people and one of the best public servants this country has.”

Kamala Harris, the 55-year-old senator, is the first non-white American woman who will appear as a running mate of a major candidate in a U.S. presidential election.

Kamala Harris participated in the Democratic Party’s primary elections for the 2020 presidential election, but withdrew from the competition in the early stages.

Kamala Harris is a lawyer who previously served as the District Attorney of San Francisco and Attorney General of the State of California. She is recognized as one of the most prominent voices in American society against inequality and racial discrimination.

Kamala Harris’s mother is Indian and her father is from Jamaica. She is the second Black woman in American history to reach the U.S. Senate.

Joe Biden said in another tweet: “When Kamala was Attorney General, she worked with my son Beau. I was aware of their fight against big banks and saw them working to improve workers’ conditions and support women and children. I was honored at that time, and now I am honored to choose her as my partner in this campaign.”

Following Kamala Harris’s selection as the running mate of the likely future president, she said in a Twitter message: “Joe Biden can unite the American people because he has dedicated his life to fighting for us. As president, he will make America live up to our ideals.”

Reactions to Kamala Harris’s Selection

Susan Rice, one of Kamala Harris’s rivals for Biden’s vice presidential position and former National Security Advisor to Barack Obama, issued a statement praising her previous rival and expressing support for Joe Biden’s decision, wishing them victory.

Barack Obama, former U.S. President, also welcomed Joe Biden’s decision in a statement and said: “This is a good day for our country.”

In contrast, Donald Trump’s presidential campaign headquarters issued a statement calling Kamala Harris a “phony” who has abandoned her previous principles and is now aligning with the left wing of the Democratic Party.

The Democratic National Convention for the formal introduction of Joe Biden as the party’s candidate and his running mate Kamala Harris will be held next week from August 17 for four days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
