A number of Republicans in the US Congress criticize the presence of the European Union representative at the presidential inauguration

Eight Republican members of the US House of Representatives criticized the presence of a representative of the European Union at the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a letter to Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief.
Claudia Tenney, of New York, Tom Brecht of Tennessee, Stephanie Brice of Oklahoma, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Brian Mast of Florida, Nicole Maliotakis of New York, Fred Keller of Pennsylvania and Ronnie Jackson of Texas signed the letter.
Claudia Tenney has said in this regard that while the European Union supports human rights and democratic principles on the global stage, at the same time it legitimizes the election of Ebrahim Raisi, which is shameful and discouraging.
The Republican US Congressman continued, Ebrahim Raisi is "a murderer who killed thousands of his own people and came to power in an unfair and unfree election."
The inauguration ceremony of the new President of the Islamic Republic of Iran was held on Thursday, August 4th, in the parliament building, and Enrique Moura, Deputy Secretary-General of the European Union External Action Service, was present at the ceremony.
The presence of the European Union representative at the inauguration ceremony of Ebrahim Raisi, a member of the "four-member death squad" and one of the main perpetrators of the nationwide executions of political prisoners in 1988, sparked a wave of criticism, with critics evaluating this action as contrary to European human rights values.
Amnesty International had also announced that Ebrahim Raisi should be subject to criminal investigation for his role in "crimes against humanity" and the 1988 massacre.
