Iran claims to pay compensation to some families of Ukrainian plane crash victims

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister claimed on Tuesday that compensation would be paid to a number of families of those killed in the Ukrainian plane shot down by the Revolutionary Guards.

Mohsen Baharvand, during a trip to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, and a meeting with ICAO officials, said, "So far, a number of families of the victims of the Ukrainian plane crash have received compensation."

According to a report by Fars News Agency, Mr. Baharvand presented a report on the "technical investigation of the accident and the pursuit of criminal aspects" during this meeting.

The Iranian government had previously approved paying $150,000 to the Iranian and non-Iranian survivors of the victims of the downing of the Ukrainian plane, but many families had rejected the amount.

Some families, along with the governments of Canada and Ukraine, have called for a convincing explanation from Iran in this regard, calling the missile launch by the Revolutionary Guards "deliberate."

The last round of negotiations between Iran and Ukraine took place in October last year.

Yevgeny Yenin, Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the negotiating team, told Radio Farda last week about the reason for the long delay in continuing the talks, "There was a long pause, because we were waiting for the Iranian side to fulfill the promises it made in the previous round of negotiations. On the surface, we have witnessed some developments, but if we look into the details and depths of the matter, we realize that our numerous questions still remain unanswered."

Ukrainian airliner PS-752 was shot down by at least two missiles fired by the Revolutionary Guards on January 8, 2019, killing all 176 people on board, most of whom were Iranians and dual Iranian-Canadian citizens. Citizens of Afghanistan, Britain, Germany, Sweden, and Ukraine were also killed in the incident.
