Christian Citizens' Declaration for a Free Iran Based on Freedom and Democratic Transition

A number of Christian citizens issued statements and sent letters about the future of Iran, emphasizing democratic transition, freedom of religion, and support for the Iranian people.
As the political and social crises in Iran escalate, a group of Iranian Christian activists inside and outside the country have published a letter titled “A Free Iran” to express their position on the country’s political future. The group, which consists of priests, church ministers, and directors of Christian organizations, is trying to present the perspective of a segment of the Iranian Christian community in discussions about the future of Iran.
By issuing a public statement and sending two official letters, the group has emphasized that Iranian Christians, as part of the country's society, feel a sense of responsibility for the fateful developments in Iran and want to shape a future based on freedom, justice, and universal participation.
In its first statement, published on February 28, 2026, the community called on Iranians to maintain a spirit of solidarity and responsibility in the face of the difficult and tense situation in the country. The statement emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable people, providing humanitarian aid, and disseminating accurate and reliable information.
The signatories of the statement also called on the public to follow news about developments in the country only from reliable sources to prevent fear and confusion in society. They emphasized that maintaining hope, peace, and national empathy at such times is vital to overcoming the crisis.
In another letter signed by a number of Christian leaders, the Islamic Republic is criticized for human rights violations and widespread repression of citizens, and it is emphasized that Iran needs to transition to a free and democratic system in order to achieve stability and progress.
This statement sets out a set of principles for the future of Iran, including the equality of all citizens before the law, the separation of religion from the state, freedom of expression and religion, the release of political and ideological prisoners, and ensuring the participation of the people in determining the political destiny of the country.
The signatories also welcomed efforts to create convergence among different political forces and supported the role of Prince Reza Pahlavi in trying to facilitate a peaceful transition of power.
Another part of the group's activities involves sending a letter to US President Donald Trump. In this letter, the authors appreciate the support that has been given to the Iranian people so far and call on the international community to stand with the Iranian nation.
The letter also states that international support can help create conditions in which Iranians can freely decide on the political future of their country. The authors of the letter also express hope that Iran will become a country of peace, stability, and freedom in the future.
The activists' statements come as Iran's Christian community has faced widespread restrictions over the past decades. Many organizations advocating for religious freedom have reported that Christian citizens in Iran have faced arrest, interrogation, threats, and harsh judicial sentences.
Human rights activists have also repeatedly stated that some Christians have been pressured simply for religious activities, participating in home gatherings, or promoting their beliefs. This situation has led many Iranian Christians to emigrate to continue their lives and religious activities.
Despite these circumstances, Christian activists say that Iran's Christian community is still part of the Iranian nation and wants to play a role in shaping a free and just future for the country.
The statement concludes that Iran's future must be shaped by respect for human dignity and fundamental freedoms; a future in which all citizens, regardless of their religion or belief, enjoy equal rights.
According to these activists, the realization of religious freedom and the separation of the religious institution from the state can pave the way for a society in which followers of different religions live side by side in peace and mutual respect.
