More than 113 million people were hungry in 2018.

Research shows that in 2018, more than 113 million people in the world were hungry due to war, climate change and economic turmoil. Experts warn that another 143 million people are on the verge of a food crisis.
Experts' research shows that more than 113 million people worldwide were in a food crisis in 2018 due to war, climate change and economic turmoil. Researchers have also warned that food crises will affect tens of millions of people worldwide in the coming year.
The number of hungry people in the world for 2017 recorded a figure of about 124 million people.
According to a report published by the Food Security Information Network on April 2, conflict and insecurity are causing the plight of 74 million people, equivalent to two-thirds of those who experts warn are in urgent need of assistance.
The Food Security Information Network is a global project launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The network used a five-stage scale for its research, with the third stage identified as "crisis," the fourth as "emergency," and the fifth as "disaster."
According to the Thompson Reuters Foundation, Luca Russo, a senior analyst at the FAO, has warned that the livelihoods of millions more people could reach stage three or higher.
"The figure of 113 million people is actually the tip of the iceberg," Luca Russo continued. "If you look at the people at the bottom of the iceberg, it's true that they are not in a food crisis, but they are on the verge of it."
The FAO's senior analyst explains that the situation of another 143 million people is so fragile that even a short period of drought would plunge them into a food crisis.
He continues: "If we don't fundamentally work on the problems of these people and eliminate some of the components that will put them in a critical situation, the number of hungry people in the world will increase dramatically."
Which countries were hit by the food crisis last year?
Among the countries that experienced food crises in 2018, war-torn Yemen experienced the worst situation, with 16 million hungry people.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, with 13 million citizens in need of food, and Afghanistan, with about 10.6 million hungry people, are in second and third place.
