Death sentence of Kurdish political prisoner accused of murder confirmed; Abbas Vahedian Shahroudi's poor physical condition

According to some human rights organizations, the death sentence of a Kurdish political prisoner accused of murdering a member of the Revolutionary Guards was served on him in Urmia Central Prison after confirmation by Branch 31 of the Supreme Court.

According to the human rights website "HeNgaw", on Tuesday, October 26, the death sentence of Shaker Behrouzi, a resident of the village of Dizaj Margur in the Urmia region, which was issued in January 2020 by the First Branch of the Urmia Criminal Court, was communicated to him in recent days.

Mr. Behrouzi is accused of murdering a member of the Revolutionary Guards named Mamel Mohammadi. According to "He Ngaw", the relatives of the deceased were forced to file a complaint under pressure from the IRGC's intelligence forces. However, according to He Ngaw, twelve people had testified that Shakir Behrouzi was in his village at the time of the murder.

The report adds that Mr. Behrouzi confessed to the murder under torture and was denied the right to a lawyer during court hearings.

Mr. Vahedian Shahroudi's Telegram channel, publishing this news, wrote that on Wednesday, October 27, he called his wife Shahla Jahanbin and informed her of his poor physical condition, saying that for the umpteenth time in recent days he had been experiencing high blood pressure, headaches, and severe neck pain, suffering from toothaches, and his gums were bleeding.

Abbas Vahedian Shahroudi, a teacher and civil activist, was arrested by security forces at his home on Wednesday, September 1, and remains in detention.

Amnesty International announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday, October 28, writing: "Iranian authorities have once again shown their shameless disrespect for the right to life and disregarded their international obligations."

The tweet continued: "Justice is never achieved by taking life."

Diana Al-Tahawi, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, declared the execution of the death penalty on Tuesday, October 26, the "most cruel and inhumane" form of punishment, and called on Iranian authorities to stop the execution of this prisoner and to suspend the execution of death sentences until the death penalty is completely abolished.

According to this human rights organization, according to court documents, the 30-year-old defendant was arrested in Alborz Province after a complaint was filed by the father of a 10-year-old boy and sentenced to death in the winter of 2019 by Branch 1 of the Criminal Court of Alborz Province on charges of raping the child.

According to videos posted on social media, Haft Tapeh Company workers gathered at the factory premises for the second consecutive day in a new round of protests.

According to the Telegram channel of the "Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Workers' Union", on Wednesday, October 29, the workers of this company gathered at the factory and once again demanded that their demands be addressed and the conviction of Farzaneh Zeilabi, the lawyer defending the Haft Tappeh workers, be overturned.

They also demanded that the status of the company and its board of directors be clarified after being removed from the private sector, that their union demands be paid, that all dismissed workers be reinstated, and that the company's Islamic Council office be closed.

Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Agricultural and Industrial Company, with about half a century of history, is the oldest sugar production factory in Iran. Since its transfer to the private sector in 2015, the company's workers have held dozens of rallies to demand that their demands, including the payment of their arrears, be addressed.

Previously, the Voice of America reported, citing some news agencies, that "after court hearings were held last winter," ownership of the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Agro-Industrial Company had been taken away from the private sector and transferred to the government.
