The number of tenants in Tehran exceeded the number of owners for the first time

According to the latest reports, in 1400, the number of tenants in the capital exceeded that of owners, and the official rate of rent growth in Tehran, which was reported to be around 30 percent until last year, exceeded 51 percent in December of this year.
This is while a member of the presidium of the parliament announced two weeks ago that, according to official statistics, "the price of land in Tehran, on average, has increased about 40 times in the past 10 years and the price of housing has increased about 20 times, and three-tenths of the population must wait 120 years to buy a 70-meter unit."
According to official statistics, the urban rental rate in the entire country rose from 18 percent in 1986 to 38 percent in 2016 over thirty years. In 2019, 42 percent of people in Tehran were renters, and now in 2021, the number of renters in the capital has outnumbered owners.
Official reports from the National Center for Statistics of Iran also show that in 2016 and 2017, the average share of housing in household expenses was 44 percent, while in 2019 and 2021, this figure increased to between 55 and 60 percent of household expenses. According to Rostam Ghasemi, Minister of Roads and Urban Development, now an average of 60 to 70 percent of household expenses is spent on housing.
In recent years, numerous official reports have been published about the housing situation, the skyrocketing rents, and the astronomical growth in housing prices, especially in large cities like Tehran.
The latest official report published by IRNA, the state news agency of the Islamic Republic, states that the growth rate of rents across the country has now reached 54.2 percent in December of this year, from 32.4 percent in December of last year.
