Las Vegas shooting leaves 58 dead, more than 500 injured

Las Vegas Police Chief Joseph Lombardo announced that a shooting near the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas left 58 dead and more than 500 injured.

CNN reported that the incident was the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

The shooter has been identified as Steven Paddock, 64, of Mesquite.

Stephen Paddock committed suicide before police arrived at his hotel room.

Las Vegas police previously said they had taken down the armed suspect.

The suspect was a local resident, police said. Police had previously said they were looking for an Asian woman named Mary Lou Donnelly, who was with the shooter at the time of the shooting.

The shooting occurred at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Sunday near an outdoor concert. Police said the attacker opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, firing an automatic weapon at concertgoers.

An eyewitness said gunshots could be heard for five minutes.

Hundreds of people fled the scene of the shooting, and videos and photos of the incident have been posted on Twitter.

Several police officers were injured in the shooting, one of whom is reported to be in critical condition.

US President Donald Trump tweeted his condolences to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting.

Flights to McCarran International Airport have been suspended.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown.
