Jerry Pillay: Violence and suffering in Gaza must end

Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, stressed the need to end the endless cycle of violence and suffering in Gaza.

The World Council of Churches is a body whose founding churches were mainly from Europe and North America. Today, however, most of its member churches are from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific. There are currently 352 member churches in the council.

According to Religion Media Center, Dr. Jerry Pillay, Secretary General of the World Council of Churches, met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, West Bank, yesterday, following his six-day visit to Palestine.

In addition to meeting with Mahmoud Abbas, Dr. Pillay met and discussed with other religious and political leaders, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog. During the meeting, Mahmoud Abbas provided Dr. Pillay with recent reports on the situation in Gaza and stressed the need for an immediate halt to Israeli attacks on Muslim and Christian sanctuaries and a ceasefire in Gaza. He also announced the Palestinian Authority's readiness to negotiate with Israel to establish a lasting peace for all people.

Dr. Pillay, who is a member of the United Protestant Church in South Africa, also emphasized international and regional efforts to stop the war in Gaza.
