Prison Sentence for Another Detainee from December Protests in Tabriz

The Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tabriz city has sentenced Alireza Moeinian, a civil activist and one of those detained during last December’s protests, to imprisonment.

Alireza Moeinian has been sentenced by Branch Two of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Ahrari, to “eight months of punitive imprisonment” on charges including “propaganda against the system” and “participation in illegal gatherings.”

During Iran’s nationwide protests that began on Thursday, December 7th, 1396, and spread to over 72 Iranian cities, severe crackdowns were carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran, resulting in several deaths and thousands of arrests.

The suppression of protesters and the filing of legal cases against hundreds of them has raised concerns among international bodies and U.S. government officials.

Mike Pence, the U.S. Vice President, was among senior American officials who repeatedly supported the Iranian people’s right to protest against the government during the days of protests.

Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, also strongly condemned the killing and detention of some individuals in connection with Iran’s protests.

Additionally, Nikki Haley, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, called for addressing the suppression of protests in Iran in the UN Security Council and warned the Islamic Republic government that the world is watching its conduct.
