Reza (Gholamreza) Resaei, 34, is a Kurdish Yarsan citizen from the city of “Sahneh” in Kermanshah Province, who participated in the commemoration of the twenty-first anniversary of “Seyyed Khalil Alinejad”, one of the Kurdish Yarsan leaders whose name became linked with the start of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising, and was arrested during the aforementioned protests.
He was sentenced by Branch 2 of the Criminal Court of Kermanshah One on charges of “attempting premeditated murder” of Nader Birahmi, head of the Sepah Pasdaran Intelligence Organization in Sahneh city, “inflicting intentional non-fatal injuries not leading to death”, “demonstration and knife display”, and “disrupting public order through creating commotion and turmoil” to execution, payment of blood money, one year of imprisonment, and 74 lashes.
During court sessions, Reza Resaei rejected the charges against him and repeatedly stated that in the Sahneh Intelligence Directorate detention center, he was forced to make forced confessions against himself due to torture and threats of sexual assault. However, his final court session was held on September 30, 2023, and his death sentence dated October 6 was formally notified to his lawyers in writing.
“Kheyrollah Hagjouyan”, a Kurdish Yarsan civil activist and former political prisoner, as Reza Resaei’s advocate, released a video in November of this year, emphasizing breaking silence in the face of the death sentence issued against Reza Resaei and criticizing the unjust verdict issued by the judge.
Mr. Hagjouyan, while pointing out that the said sentence was issued without proving the crime against Reza Resaei, stated: “Arbitrary detention, Reza Resaei’s lack of access to a lawyer, lack of access to the case file, public opinion engineering, the ambiguity of instances and evidence, the introduction of false witnesses as accused parties and inciting them against each other, and threats and forced confessions were among the unjust legal proceedings and the failure to uncover the truth.”
The verdict confirming Reza Resaei’s death sentence, a political prisoner, was upheld in Branch 17 of the Supreme Court under the presidency of Judge “Mohammad Barani” on December 16. In the aforementioned verdict, it is stated that the execution of this political prisoner’s death sentence is contingent upon the permission of the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Bahman Reihani, commander of the Sepah Pasdaran of Prophet Muhammad in Kermanshah Province, has also called for the swift execution of Mr. Resaei’s death sentence.
Reza Resaei’s case was referred yesterday, Sunday, December 31, to the execution department of the criminal court of Kermanshah, and he now faces serious danger of his death sentence being carried out.
