Student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh's five-year prison sentence confirmed

On Sunday, December 4, attorney Amir Raisian announced the confirmation of the five-year prison sentence of student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh in Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals.
Ms. Hosseinzadeh was previously sentenced to five years in prison and a two-year ban on cyberspace by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of "gathering and colluding with the intention of acting against national security."
According to her defense lawyer, the charge was based on “organizing a small gathering of students” and Leila Hosseinzadeh’s presence at the gathering. The event was held in front of Sharif University of Technology to celebrate the birthday of Mohammad Sharifi-Moghaddam, a student and imprisoned Gonabadi dervish.
Amir Raisian has emphasized that this sentence "was issued explicitly in violation of articles of the Penal Code."
Leila Hosseinzadeh was a student at the University of Tehran and among those arrested during the January 2017 protests. She was released on bail after two weeks.
In March 2017, this student activist was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to five years in prison on charges of "gathering and colluding against national security" and one year in prison on charges of "propaganda against the system."
Also, a two-year "ban on leaving the country" sentence was considered as an additional punishment in his case.
This sentence was reduced to 30 months in prison on July 25, 2019 for the first charge and confirmed in full for the second charge and additional punishment. According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, only 30 months in prison was applicable to Ms. Hosseinzadeh.
This student activist was arrested by security agents at her home on August 29, 2019. After being held for ten days in one of the IRGC intelligence safe houses, she was transferred to the women's ward of Evin Prison to serve her 30-month prison sentence.
Leila Hosseinzadeh was sent on leave from the women's ward of Evin Prison in late March 2019 and was eventually granted amnesty.
