Housing purchases by Iranians in Türkiye grew by 30 percent

A new report by the Turkish Statistical Institute shows that Iranians purchased 10,056 housing units in Turkey last year, an increase of about 30% compared to 2020.
Iranians broke the historical record for monthly housing purchases by foreigners in December, purchasing 1,462 housing units. After Iran, citizens of Iraq, Russia, Afghanistan, and Germany had the highest number of housing purchases in Turkey.
Statistics from the Turkish Central Bank also show that the country attracted $5.1 billion in foreign investment in real estate last year. Last year, a total of more than 59,000 housing units were sold in Turkey to foreign citizens, a 44 percent increase from 2020 and a new record.
The largest growth in housing purchases by foreigners occurred in the last two months of the year, when the value of the Turkish national currency, the lira, plummeted.
Türkiye grants citizenship to foreigners who have invested at least $250,000 in real estate.
During 2019 and 2020, a total of 7,500 foreign citizens succeeded in obtaining Turkish citizenship by purchasing property, but this trend has jumped sharply in 2021, and in the first six months of 2021 alone, ten thousand people have obtained Turkish citizenship.
According to official statistics, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, China, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, and Pakistan are the 10 countries with the largest share in this table.
