Revolutionary Court sentences 13 of those arrested in August protests to six months to one year in prison

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced 13 protesters from August of this year to six months to one year in prison on charges of "acting against national security by participating in illegal gatherings."

According to the IRNA news agency, five of the 13 defendants are women and the rest are men. The Iranian state news agency also wrote that the sentences were issued in light of the defendants' "expressions of remorse."

The protests in August of this year and January of last year took place in dozens of Iranian cities following sharp price increases and economic turmoil, and were met with government repression.

US officials condemned the crackdown on protesters in Iran, while Amnesty International called 2018 a "year of shame" for the Islamic Republic, citing the crackdown.
