Head of the Relief Committee: The poverty line has reached 10 million Tomans

The head of the relief committee says that estimates indicate that, on average, between 2001 and 2019, about 33 percent of the country's population fell below the "multidimensional poverty line," and the poverty line rose from 950,000 Tomans in 2011 to 10 million Tomans in 2020.
According to ISNA, Morteza Bakhtiari said on Sunday, August 14, that the results obtained in the poverty study from 2009 to 2019 show that household expenses have increased 22 times during these 18 years.
According to him, while the population below the absolute poverty line reached 15 percent from 2013 to 2017, it increased to 30 percent from 2017 to 2019.
Iranian authorities and institutions have so far provided different statistics on the growth of poverty in the country.
Last June, the Majlis Research Center announced that the poverty line for four-person households in Tehran had increased from 2.5 million tomans to 4.5 million tomans in the last two years, indicating an 80 percent increase.
This is while the head of the relief committee says that the poverty line has reached 10 million tomans, and Hamidreza Imamgholitabar, inspector of the Supreme Assembly of Workers' Representatives, also announced this figure at 10 million tomans in October last year.
Last month, the World Bank announced in its new report on the outlook for poverty and inequality in Iran that the ongoing recession of the last few quarters and the emergence of high inflation have pushed a significant number of the Iranian population towards the poverty line, in such a way that per capita consumption in Iran has decreased significantly and, as a result, poverty has increased sharply.
