Oil Derrick Theft in Khuzestan

An oil derrick in Khuzestan, located seventy kilometers along the Ahvaz to Haftkel road, has been stolen.

Yesterday, news circulated on social media networks indicating the theft of an oil derrick in Khuzestan. According to eyewitness accounts, the trailers that transported and relocated the derrick’s components were registered in Tehran and have left the province.

According to Farsi reports, managers of oil-rich regions and the National Drilling Company have shown no reaction regarding this news and have informally denied ownership of the said derrick.

According to published reports and citing an informed source whose identity is unknown, the stolen derrick did not belong to the southern oil-rich regions and the National Drilling Company, but rather belonged to one of the private companies of Babak Zanjani. Babak Zanjani’s private company owns derricks in various parts of the country that are inactive.

Babak Zanjani is imprisoned due to large-scale financial activities related to circumventing international sanctions and economic corruption, as well as charges of embezzlement; however, the theft of the said derrick, which belonged to his private company, and from which no information has been disclosed by any institution or organization, is controversial. Not only has no organization commented on the theft of the said derrick and the number of others that exist in different regions of the country, but they have also expressed ignorance of the matter.

Is there truly a trace of Babak Zanjani’s involvement behind the scenes of this oil derrick theft, or has the mention of Babak Zanjani and his private companies emerged due to public concern?
