Storm in Tehran; One dead, dozens injured

An unprecedented storm has hit Tehran province. According to the weather service, the storm has moved from Imam Khomeini Airport to the west of Tehran. The storm has so far left one person dead and more than 50 injured.

An unprecedented dust storm has hit all cities in Tehran province. The storm and rain in Rey, Robat Karim, and around Imam Khomeini Airport were intense and accompanied by scattered dust and showers.

The storm hit Tehran, Malard, Shahriar, Qods, Varamin, Pishva, Pakdasht, and Qarchak on Wednesday, May 30.

Ahmad Sadeghi, head of Tehran's Crisis Management Headquarters, told the Young Journalists' Club that one person was killed on Shahid Rajaee Street in District 16 due to a wall collapse. He said that in addition to the collapse of the wall, a number of trees were broken and in some places, scaffolding from buildings had also collapsed.

Mojtaba Khaledi, spokesman for Tehran's emergency department, announced that 52 people were injured in Tehran and four people were transferred to the hospital due to the storm.

Jalal Maleki, a spokesman for the fire department, spoke of heavy objects falling from buildings, collapsing facades, and downed power lines. The storm disrupted public order in Tehran, and heavy dust caused reduced visibility and traffic problems.

The Meteorological Organization reported wind speeds of 58 kilometers per hour in Tehran. Wind speeds in the Varamin Plain were reported at 70 kilometers per hour.

Mehr News Agency reported that damage was caused to urban facilities in Varamin and Pishva.

Before the storm hit, the Tehran Disaster Prevention and Management Organization had announced that the storm was moving towards Tehran at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour. People were asked to avoid high places, such as rooftops and window ledges, and if they were on the streets, to avoid stopping near old buildings, old trees, scaffolding, and objects that could fall.
