Amnesty International calls on the international community to condemn the worsening human rights situation in Iran

Amnesty International issued a statement calling on the international community to publicly condemn the worsening human rights situation in Iran during the "Universal Periodic Review" scheduled to be held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

Amnesty International, by issuing this statement, called on countries participating in the "Universal Periodic Review" meeting, which is scheduled to be held by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday, November 8, to review Iran's human rights record, to condemn the widespread human rights violations in Iran and to present solutions to Iranian authorities and officials to address them.

“The appalling list of human rights violations in Iran, from the appalling number of executions to the relentless harassment and prosecution of human rights defenders, pervasive discrimination against women and minorities, and the persistence of crimes against humanity, reflects a dramatic deterioration in the country’s human rights record,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Research Director.

According to him, this meeting is a very important opportunity for the international community to firmly declare to Iranian officials and officials that "their appalling disregard for the human rights situation will not be tolerated."

According to this report, Amnesty International has concluded that the Iranian government has "failed in all respects" in terms of human rights.

Instead of fulfilling their promise to strengthen cooperation with civil society and human rights organizations, Iranian authorities have “further undermined human rights and intensified the repression of dissent,” said Philip Luther.

According to this organization, the last time Iran's human rights record was reviewed was in 2014, and since then, Iranian authorities have significantly increased the scope of repression. During this period, more than 2,500 people have been executed under the laws of Iran, at least 19 of whom were under the age of 18 at the time of the crime. Their executions constitute a flagrant violation of international law.

Amnesty International is calling on Iranian authorities to lift restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, end discrimination against women and minorities, immediately suspend the issuance of death sentences, and end torture and other ill-treatment, unfair trials and ongoing crimes against humanity.

This year, this human rights organization has issued numerous statements and appeals calling on people and human rights activists around the world to respond to the blatant violations of human rights in Iran, including unfair trials, executions, executions of juvenile offenders, arbitrary arrests, and the issuance of long prison sentences for human rights defenders, journalists, dissidents with forced hijab, and religious and ethnic minorities.
