Sinkholes that indicate the "eternal death" of the plains of Hamedan Province

More than 24 sinkholes have appeared in the plains of Hamedan province. These sinkholes indicate the eternal death of the plains in which they have appeared. Next to these sinkholes is the “Mofateh Power Plant” which swallows groundwater.

More than 24 sinkholes of different sizes have appeared in Hamedan Province. According to the Mizan News Agency, most of these sinkholes have appeared in the “Noabad Kabudarahang” area.

The IRNA news agency wrote in a report that the destruction of plains and land subsidence due to excessive extraction of groundwater in Hamadan Province is a small sign of the limitless plunder of natural resources and weak management in the plains of Hamadan Province.

According to this report, excessive extraction of groundwater in agriculture, drilling of unauthorized wells, and the operation of the "Mofateh" thermal power plant in the Kabud-Rahang plain are among the most important factors in the emergence of these deep sinkholes.

The report also states that the formation of these sinkholes means the eternal death of the plains in which they have formed.

In this context, Manouchehr Amiri, a member of the academic staff of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center of Hamadan Province, said that the sinkholes in the Kabud-Rahang Plain were created as a result of hot and carbonated solutions entering the groundwater and corroding the rocks.

The report cites the construction of the "Mofateh Power Plant" in the Kabud Rahang region as a reason for exacerbating the problems in this region: "Due to the high need for water, power plants must be built next to dams and rivers, while the Mofateh Power Plant operates in the Kabud Rahang region, which lacks dams and rivers."

According to Manouchehr Amiri, a geologist, the Mofateh power plant has a significant impact on the occurrence of such phenomena.

Previously, Ehsan Ghanbari, the governor of Kabudarahang County, had said, "The water reserves of the plains of Kabudarahang County are facing an average annual decrease of one meter due to drought and over-withdrawal."

According to the governor of Kabudarahang County, there are more than a thousand unauthorized wells in the county.

A sinkhole in the "Noabad" area, with a depth of 60 meters, is the deepest sinkhole in this area.
